Eden Alternative

Thomas created the Eden Alternative with his wife and their intent was to give seniors more empowerment in senior living. Thomas was concerned with what he called the 3 plagues (boredom, loneliness and helplessness). He believed in changing the dynamic of the staff and residents to put laughter and fun in senior homes. He brought in pets, gardens, messy art projects and life back in senior living spaces.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

We paid for Mom & Dad’s move to the senior living facility and added some $ to their savings which is great and the estate sale comapany did the work” I have heard this quote many times from seniors and their families after the estate sale process is over.”

There was a two hour PBS special in 2003 that highlighted the Eden Alternative and all it’s benefits. The show also discussed the 1.6 million seniors that are currently living in nursing homes and the living conditions and the quality of life that exists there.

1. Thomas was given a grant for $10 million by the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation to produce the “Green House Project” which will concentrate on these 5 attributes:
2. Intimacy: Clusters of smaller homes with five or six people per bldg.
3. Autonomy: Each senior has their own room / bathroom and free of scheduling.
4. Warmth: Decor and furnishings that encourage social gatherings.
5. Smart Technology: Computers, pager and tablets are used and encouraged.
6. Green Living: Plenty of sunlight, plants and access to the outside.

The results from Eden Alternative Homes are truly special. The two numbers that struck me was nursing turnover was one/third of other institutions and patient turnover was also cut in half. This goes back to their goal of people being happy and having fun where they live as well as being part of the decisions.
